It doesn't. It's how hard you can squeeze something with your hand.
Grip strength sounds almost too simple to matter. It's the kind of thing you'd associate with a carnival strength-tester, not a clinical risk marker. But the research behind it is substantial, consistent across huge populations, and genuinely surprising to most people the first time they hear it.
What the Research Actually Shows
The most well-known evidence comes from the PURE study, which followed roughly 140,000 people across 17 countries. The finding: for every modest reduction in grip strength, all-cause mortality risk rose in a clear, stepwise pattern — a relationship that held up even after accounting for other major risk factors like heart disease and cancer.
